Skills Drive Hope for Returnees

In a decisive move to strengthen reintegration pathways for returned migrants, Sierra Leone has launched a new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative aimed at equipping beneficiaries with practical, income-generating skills aligned with current labour market demands.

The programme, unveiled on April 21, 2026, at the Jui Campus of Freetown Polytechnic, is spearheaded by the International Organization for Migration with funding support from the European Union. It is specifically designed to support Sierra Leoneans returning from irregular migration routes by offering them viable opportunities for sustainable livelihoods at home.

Speaking during the inauguration, Deputy Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara, described the initiative as timely and aligned with the government’s broader strategy to empower young people through skills development. He emphasized that expanding access to technical education remains central to addressing unemployment and reducing vulnerability to unsafe migration.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to transforming lives through practical education,” Aziz-Kamara stated, noting that the government continues to reposition TVET as a credible and rewarding career pathway rather than a secondary option.

The Deputy Minister commended the IOM for its continued dedication to promoting safe and dignified migration, while also expressing appreciation to the European Union for its sustained partnership in advancing development-focused interventions in Sierra Leone.

The training programme will cover a diverse range of vocational fields, including aluminum fabrication, painting, solar installation, welding, electrical installation, tiling, and computer software applications. According to project coordinators, these areas were carefully selected based on existing gaps in the local labour market and their potential for job creation.

Aziz-Kamara further highlighted the role of Freetown Polytechnic as a key implementing partner, citing its capacity and experience in delivering quality technical education. He urged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity, stressing that discipline, commitment, and consistency are critical to achieving long-term success.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader development agenda under the leadership of Julius Maada Bio, which prioritizes job creation, human capital development, and the reduction of irregular migration through sustainable economic empowerment.

For many of the beneficiaries, the programme represents more than just skills training it offers a renewed sense of purpose and a pathway to rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience.
