ECOWAS Engages Parliament on Vision 2050

Parliament of Sierra Leone, on Tuesday 16/06/2026, received a delegation from ECOWAS regarding the Popularization of ECOWAS vision 2050.

In a meeting held at the Committee Room One in Parliament,  the Former President of ECOFEPA and current Deputy Chief Whip of Parliament, Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay, who moderated the event, elaborated on the essence of the program. She said the program is designed to provide insight on ECOWAS Vision 2050. She said, since the inception of ECWAS in 1975, the community has been committed to ensuring regional integration.

Welcoming the ECOWAS delegation, the Clerk of Parliament, Karmoh K. Conteh emphasized the significance of the event. He added that Parliament of Sierra Leone is ready to receive ECOWAS and also to align with Vision 2050.

Speaking on the side of the Opposition, Hon. Catherine Zainab Tarawallie joined previous speakers in welcoming the delegation to Sierra Leone. She emphasized the significance of regional integral across the subregion. She assures the delegation of full support from Parliament, particularly from the Opposition.

Giving the purpose of the meeting, the Director of Strategic Planning and Monitoring and Evaluation, ECOWAS Commission, Gbogbolo Musa, said the engagement is to popularize ECOWAS vision 2050. He said the intervention is geared towards building awareness about ECOWAS activities. ‘’ We are doing this in order to bring ECOWAS close to the people’’ he said. He added that the vision is developed based on the aspiration of the people in West Africa. He continued that, the engagement will serve as an advocacy for the effectiveness of vision 2050  ‘’ We are here to ask this Parliament to take this message to various constituencies for better understanding from the people’’ he said.

ECOWAS Resident representative to Sierra Leone, Ambassador John Azumah, emphasized the importance of the event. He commended the Leadership of the President of Sierra Leone and the Chairman of ECOWAS Heads of State, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, for the support over the years.  ‘’ The ECOWAS vision 2050 is the profound aspiration of the people of West Africa’’ he said. He continued that, by 2050, ECOWAS will be a fully integrated community in the region.   He added, that, ECOWAS vision 2050 is people’s centred and that everyone is involved, including women and children. He ended by encouraging Parliament for active contribution in the implementation of Vision 2050 in order to bring hope to the present and future generation in the region.

PowerPoint presentations were made extensively, highlighting the significance of ECOWAS vision 2050 in ensuring economic and regional integration. Various presenters captured and reemphasized the five pillars encapsulated in ECOWAS vision 2050, National Early Warning and Response Mechanism, amongst others.

The Director of Parliamentary and Public Relations Department, Sheku Lamin Turay, earlier emphasized the importance of the event and the need for an efficient regional integration in West Africa.
