In a strategic effort to boost digital access and financial empowerment across Sierra Leone, Africell has partnered with MiKashBoks to unveil a new savings-based initiative dubbed “Save to Buy” a program designed to help customers acquire Samsung smartphones through structured, incremental payments.

The launch event took place on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Africell Headquarters on Pivot Street, Wilberforce, Freetown.

Speaking at the event, Joe Abass Bangura, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Africell, said the initiative aims to democratize access to essential digital tools, particularly Samsung smartphones, which Africell exclusively distributes in Sierra Leone.

“In today’s digital economy, smartphones are not a luxury they are vital for communication, education, business, and access to public services,” said Bangura. “This partnership provides a financially inclusive path for more Sierra Leoneans to own smartphones without the burden of upfront payments.”

He added that the “Save to Buy” scheme is primarily targeted at AfriMoney subscribers and aligns with Africell’s broader mission to deliver affordable, innovative technology solutions.

The savings model, developed in collaboration with fintech platform MiKashBoks, allows customers to make consistent contributions towards owning smartphones and other digital devices. According to Rashidatu Sankoh, Sales and Marketing Manager at MiKashBoks, the program encourages disciplined savings starting from as little as Le 50 per week.

“This is a game-changer for many people who dream of owning a Samsung device but are limited by high upfront costs or lack of access to formal credit,” Sankoh said. “There are no loans, no debts, and no hidden fees just a goal-based savings plan.”

Customers can participate by downloading the MiKashBoks app, selecting a Samsung phone under the “Save to Buy” feature, and choosing a weekly or monthly payment option. The system replaces informal, unstructured saving practices with a transparent and digital-friendly alternative.

John Konteh, Marketing Director at AfriMoney, explained that the scheme integrates with the AfriMoney digital wallet, making the saving process seamless.

“Everything can now be done at your convenience from saving to selecting your device without physically visiting a store,” Konteh stated. “With a simple dial to *352# or by using the MiKashBoks app, users can begin their savings journey immediately.”

The initiative is expected to significantly enhance smartphone penetration in Sierra Leone, supporting broader goals around digital literacy, economic participation, and e-governance.

Africell and MiKashBoks say they remain committed to driving inclusive technology and empowering underserved communities through smart partnerships and customer-friendly innovations.
