China Ambassador Engages Youth Ministry

Diplomatic engagement between Sierra Leone and the People’s Republic of China took a youth-centered turn on Thursday, January 15, 2026, when the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao Yong, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh, at his office in Freetown.

The visit, described by officials as cordial and forward-looking, underscored the long-standing friendship between Sierra Leone and the People’s Republic of China, while placing renewed emphasis on cooperation in youth development as a key driver of national progress.

Welcoming the Ambassador, Minister Sannoh congratulated him on his appointment and expressed appreciation for China’s continued partnership with Sierra Leone across various sectors. He used the opportunity to highlight the country’s youthful demographic profile, noting that with a population of just over eight million people, more than 70 percent are young citizens.

According to the Minister, this demographic reality presents both a responsibility and an opportunity for government and development partners. He emphasized that the Ministry of Youth Affairs is committed to harnessing the energy, creativity, and potential of young people through policies and programmes that promote skills development, entrepreneurship, and socio-economic inclusion.

“Sierra Leone is a peaceful and beautiful country with a vibrant youth population,” Minister Sannoh stated. “Our focus is to transform this demographic advantage into concrete development outcomes that will benefit our nation and strengthen partnerships with countries like China.”

In his response, Ambassador Zhao Yong commended Sierra Leone for maintaining peace and stability, describing the country’s youthful population as a strategic asset for sustainable development. He reaffirmed China’s recognition of youth as the backbone of any nation’s future and praised the Government of Sierra Leone for prioritizing youth empowerment.

“China is impressed by the commitment shown by the Government of Sierra Leone towards its young people,” Ambassador Zhao said. “We are ready to enhance cooperation in areas such as skills training, innovation, capacity building, and people-to-people exchanges that can deliver long-term benefits.”

The Ambassador further assured the Minister of China’s willingness to deepen bilateral relations through youth-focused initiatives designed to foster innovation, employment opportunities, and inclusive growth, while strengthening mutual understanding between the two countries.

The meeting ended on an optimistic note, with both sides expressing confidence that strengthened collaboration in the youth sector would not only deepen diplomatic ties but also contribute significantly to Sierra Leone’s national transformation and shared prosperity between the two nations.
