The diplomatic chapter between Sierra Leone and the People’s Republic of China entered a reflective moment on Thursday, 20th November 2025, as Chinese Ambassador Wang Qing paid a farewell courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas Esq., and the Clerk of Parliament, Karmoh Conteh. The visit marked the beginning of the Ambassador’s formal exit from Sierra Leone as his tour of duty concludes at the end of the month.

Unlike a mere protocol engagement, Ambassador Wang’s call symbolised the closing of a partnership defined by visible contributions, strengthened parliamentary cooperation and a deepened sense of mutual respect. Arriving in 2023, he said his tenure would end in December 2025, but the memories and partnerships forged especially with the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic would outlive his posting.

Ambassador Wang highlighted the active cooperation between both countries’ legislative institutions, citing exchange visits, capacity-strengthening engagements, and Speaker Thomas’s successful parliamentary delegation to China last year. He described Sierra Leone as his “second home,” thanking the House for its unmatched hospitality.

In his response, Speaker Thomas adopted a tone both appreciative and forward-looking. He credited the Ambassador for being instrumental in facilitating the construction of ten mobile parliamentary offices an intervention he described as “a legacy gift that will serve generations.” He directed the Clerk of Parliament to organise a befitting commissioning ceremony to honour Ambassador Wang’s contributions before his departure.

As a symbol of gratitude, the Speaker presented a farewell gift to the outgoing envoy, marking the close of a productive diplomatic relationship.

Though brief, Ambassador Wang’s tenure leaves a distinct footprint on Sierra Leone’s parliamentary development and China Sierra Leone ties. As he prepares to depart, both institutions look toward a future of continued cooperation anchored in the foundations he helped strengthen.
