BRAC Sierra Leone has joined a broad coalition of civil society actors, government officials, and development partners at the official launch of the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO) Online NGO Registration Portal, a landmark initiative aimed at transforming how non-governmental organizations operate and are regulated in Sierra Leone.

The high-level event, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, marked a decisive step toward modernizing NGO administration through digital innovation. It was formally officiated by the Chief Minister-designate, underscoring the government’s strong political will to srengthen civil society governance and promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the development sector.

Speaking at the launch, stakeholders described the new online portal as a timely and strategic intervention designed to address longstanding challenges faced by NGOs, including manual registration processes, delays in documentation, and limited access to up-to-date regulatory information. With the introduction of the digital platform, NGOs across the country can now register, update records, and manage compliance requirements more efficiently, reducing bureaucracy and improving coordination between civil society and government institutions.

BRAC Sierra Leone, one of the country’s leading development organizations, expressed pride in being part of the milestone event. The organization emphasized that the platform aligns with its broader commitment to strengthening systems, promoting good governance, and leveraging innovation to improve development outcomes for vulnerable communities.

Officials from the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO) highlighted that the portal represents years of advocacy and collaboration aimed at creating a more coordinated, credible, and accountable NGO sector. According to SLANGO leadership, digitization will not only simplify administrative processes but also enhance data accuracy, improve sector-wide planning, and reinforce public trust in civil society organizations.

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), which partnered in delivering the initiative, reiterated government’s commitment to harnessing digital tools to support national development. Ministry officials noted that reliable data on NGO activities is essential for effective planning, avoiding duplication of efforts, and ensuring that development interventions align with national priorities and the Medium-Term National Development Plan.

In his keynote remarks, the Chief Minister-designate described the portal as a “critical enabler” for development coordination, stressing that a digitally empowered civil society is better positioned to complement government efforts in service delivery, policy advocacy, and community empowerment. He encouraged NGOs to fully embrace the platform and view it as a shared tool for accountability and partnership rather than regulation alone.

Development partners and civil society representatives present at the event praised the collaborative approach that brought the portal to fruition, noting that it reflects a growing culture of partnership between government and non-state actors in Sierra Leone. Many described the launch as a foundation for deeper cooperation, data-driven decision-making, and a more resilient civil society ecosystem.

As Sierra Leone continues its transition into the digital era, the SLANGO Online NGO Registration Portal stands as a symbol of progress and reform. For organizations like BRAC Sierra Leone and other stakeholders, the initiative is not only about technology, but about building a stronger, more connected, and more effective civil society capable of driving inclusive and sustainable national development.
