In a decisive move to safeguard Freetown’s water supply, law enforcement and government agencies carried out a coordinated demolition of illegal structures along the Guma Valley main water pipeline at Mambo, Peninsula. The operation, which unfolded on Wednesday, highlighted the urgent need to protect critical infrastructure from encroachment and potential hazards.

The exercise was led by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) and Regional Commander for Freetown West, Sylvester M. N. Koroma, and involved a robust inter-agency collaboration. Teams from the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), Office of National Security (ONS), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Protected Area Authority (NPAA), and the media worked together to ensure a seamless operation.

Engineers on site confirmed that several unauthorised residential buildings had been constructed directly over the main water pipeline, severely compromising its structural integrity. The encroachments had caused persistent leakages and frequent disruptions to water supply, posing significant risks to public safety and essential services.

AIG Koroma emphasized the lawfulness and necessity of the operation, assuring stakeholders that it was conducted in strict compliance with national regulations on the protection of critical infrastructure. “Our role extends beyond enforcing the law; it is about safeguarding the lifelines of our communities. Water is essential for life, and we will not tolerate actions that threaten its delivery,” he said.

Sierra Leone Police, supported by RSLAF personnel, provided comprehensive security throughout the exercise. Officers secured the perimeter, managed crowds, and ensured that demolition and engineering teams could work safely without incident. The collaboration among multiple agencies demonstrated an effective model for addressing complex urban challenges that require both legal enforcement and technical expertise.

The successful removal of the illegal structures has restored the integrity of the Guma Valley main water pipeline, ensuring uninterrupted water supply for surrounding communities. The operation underscores the determination of Sierra Leonean authorities to uphold the rule of law, protect vital public assets, and enhance public safety across Freetown.

Authorities have warned residents against future encroachments, reminding the public that safeguarding national infrastructure is a collective responsibility and that legal actions will be taken against violators.
