WHAT NEXT AFTER WASSCE?
The completion of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) marks a significant milestone for many young people in Sierra Leone. After months and in some cases, years of academic pressure and preparation, the question now arises: what next after WASSCE?
Unfortunately, for many school-leavers, this period becomes a vacuum filled with idleness, uncertainty, and in some instances, bad choices. While it’s natural to want rest after exams, completely switching off during this time is a mistake. These months before results are released are not wasted time they are waiting moments with purpose.
Rather than sitting at home glued to entertainment, young people should actively seek opportunities that add value to their lives. Learning a skill whether it’s computing, tailoring, digital marketing, graphic design, hairdressing, or even photography can make a big difference. These skills not only boost personal confidence but also serve as a foundation for financial independence, regardless of future academic plans.
Volunteering is another productive path. It fosters a sense of responsibility, exposes individuals to the real world, and helps build useful networks. Assisting in local schools, community centres, radio stations, or with NGOs can give school-leavers practical experience and a sense of purpose.
Moreover, it is wise to read ahead and research potential courses and career paths. Those who want to enter university should begin preparing early. Reading relevant books, watching educational content, or even enrolling in free online courses can give any student a head-start. Platforms offering short-term certification courses in various fields are available online for free or at minimal cost. These are opportunities worth exploring.
The truth is, this is a defining moment. While others waste time in peer pressure, substance abuse, or excessive socialising, the focused ones are quietly preparing for the future. What is done in this gap period will either add weight to one’s future or become a lost opportunity.
In the end, life after WASSCE should not be about waiting idly for results. It should be about building, growing, learning, and becoming a better version of oneself. The world is moving fast and those who keep moving with it are the ones who will rise above average.
So the real question is not just “what next after WASSCE?” but “how wisely will this waiting period be used?”
