Moyamba Town in the Southern Province came alive with a sense of renewed optimism as the Government of Sierra Leone took a decisive step toward decentralised governance and inclusive development with the commissioning of a new district office of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT).

The official commissioning ceremony took place on Thursday, 16 January 2036, drawing senior government officials, traditional leaders, NASSIT board members, management and staff, as well as residents and workers from across Moyamba and neighboring districts. The event highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding social protection services and bringing essential public institutions closer to the people.

President Julius Maada Bio, who officially opened the facility, described the new office as a practical demonstration of his administration’s determination to make government services more accessible. “This office represents dignity and security for the hardworking people of Moyamba and surrounding areas,” he said. “It ensures that contributors can access their social security services without unnecessary hardship, delays, or long journeys to Freetown.”

The President emphasized that workers in provincial and rural areas are the backbone of the national economy, contributing significantly in sectors such as agriculture, trade, mining, and public service. He underscored the importance of a responsive and accessible pension system to protect workers during their productive years and provide stability and dignity in retirement.

“Social security is not just a benefit; it is a foundation for human capital development,” President Bio said, reaffirming his government’s commitment to strengthening institutions that safeguard workers’ rights and welfare. He also commended NASSIT for its ongoing reforms, improved governance, and expansion of services nationwide. “Through prudent investments, job creation, and protection of contributors’ funds, NASSIT has proven itself as a critical partner in national development,” he added.

Decentralization, the President continued, remains a core policy priority. Establishing district offices such as this one in Moyamba reduces administrative pressure on Freetown, stimulates local economic activity, and strengthens public confidence in government institutions at the community level.

Addressing staff of the new office, President Bio urged them to uphold professionalism, transparency, and integrity, emphasizing that public trust is earned through accountability and high-quality service delivery.

The ceremony was attended by community leaders and residents who lauded the project as a timely and transformative intervention. Many highlighted the practical benefits of having social security services closer to home, anticipating that it would streamline pension registration, benefits processing, and other essential services.

The newly commissioned NASSIT district office in Moyamba is expected to serve contributors and beneficiaries across the district and neighboring areas, reinforcing the government’s broader agenda of inclusive growth, social protection, and people-centered governance.
