Businessman Granted Bail Over Job Scam

A businessman accused of defrauding a man with false promises of overseas employment has been granted bail by the Pademba Road Court No. 1.

Julius Sylvester Jabati appeared before Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah, where he was charged with conspiracy to defraud and obtaining money by false pretences, contrary to Section 32(1) of the Larceny Act of 1916.

According to the prosecution, between 10 May and 28 July 2025 at 152 Kissy Road, Freetown, Jabati allegedly conspired with other unknown persons to defraud Mohamed Kannie Kamara of Le 191,700. He is accused of falsely promising to facilitate an overseas travel and employment programme in France or the United States.

The charges were read and explained to the accused, though no plea was taken.

Prosecuting officer, Sergeant 9939 Mohamed Lahai, applied for a short adjournment, which was granted. Magistrate Jah subsequently admitted the accused to bail in the sum of Le 250,000, with two Sierra Leonean sureties resident within the court’s jurisdiction. The sureties are required to present valid identification cards showing their Freetown addresses. Bail approval is to be granted by the Deputy Assistant Registrar.

The matter was adjourned to 23 January 2026.
