The Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL), with support from the European Union, successfully concluded a two-day intensive training program for its financial auditors, focusing on Environmental Accounting in Financial and Compliance Audits. The program, held at the Bintumani Conference Centre on 19–20 January 2026, aimed to strengthen the capacity of auditors to integrate environmental considerations into public sector financial oversight.

The training is part of ASSL’s strategic initiative to address rapidly identified capacity gaps among its financial auditors, enabling them to better understand environmental issues within public sector auditing. Participants were guided on how to ensure environmental factors are accurately reflected in financial statements, thereby promoting completeness, transparency, and reliability in public financial reporting.

Using a blend of passive instruction and participatory learning methods, the training sought to deliver transformative learning experiences. Auditors engaged in practical exercises designed to enhance their skills in gathering environmental data, applying activity-based costing, and utilizing environmental cost accounting techniques when examining financial documents. This approach is expected to equip auditors with the ability to provide more informed recommendations, supporting better management decision-making and accountability in government agencies.

Speaking at the event, representatives from the European Union praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of equipping public sector auditors with the skills necessary to address environmental challenges while maintaining high standards of financial accountability.

The training represents a key milestone in ASSL’s ongoing efforts to modernize auditing practices in Sierra Leone, aligning financial oversight with global standards and the growing emphasis on sustainable development and environmental stewardship in public sector governance.

By integrating environmental considerations into routine auditing processes, ASSL continues to reinforce its commitment to transparent, accountable, and responsible financial management, ensuring that environmental costs and impacts are systematically captured in the nation’s public accounts.
