The Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of Sierra Leone, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has expressed profound appreciation to His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and the leadership of Parliament for their role in facilitating the return of former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma to Sierra Leone and for the discontinuance of treason-related case against former President Ernest Bai Koroma.
Speaking during a parliamentary sitting held on Thursday, 16 July 2026, Hon. Kargbo described the development as a significant step towards strengthening national unity, reconciliation, and lasting peace in Sierra Leone.
Reflecting on the country’s civil war, Hon. Kargbo noted that many young Sierra Leoneans did not witness the atrocities committed during the eleven-year conflict and therefore may not fully appreciate the value of peace. He recounted showing his children a documentary on the civil war to help them understand the devastating consequences of violence.
“Most of them are very young and did not experience the horrors of the eleven-year senseless civil war. I played the documentary for them, and while watching it, my son, who attends Prince of Wales School, became emotional. Seeing the suffering of innocent Sierra Leoneans, including victims of amputations and other atrocities, reminded us all that peace and stability must never be taken for granted,” he said.
Hon. Kargbo stressed that preserving peace is a collective responsibility and called on all political actors to continue placing the national interest above partisan considerations.
He further joined the Leader of Government Business in commending the leadership of Parliament for the constructive role they played in promoting dialogue and national cohesion.
“I want to thank the leadership of Parliament for the role we have all played. I also want to assure the House that the Opposition remains fully committed to working together to achieve the objectives of Parliament in the interest of the people of Sierra Leone,” he stated.
Hon. Kargbo concluded by extending his sincere appreciation to the leadership of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), the Parliamentary Leadership, and all those who contributed to fostering peace and unity.
“I want to express our profound thanks and appreciation to the leadership of the SLPP Parliamentary Bench and the leadership of Parliament in its entirety. May God bless us all, and may God bless Sierra Leone, our only country. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.”
