President Bio Leads Sahel Security Dialogue

Efforts to strengthen regional security cooperation and address the growing challenges facing West Africa and the Sahel received renewed momentum as President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, embarked on a high-level diplomatic mission to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

Nouakchott, Mauritania, Monday, 15th June 2026  His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio arrived at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport on an official visit to Mauritania at the invitation of His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The visit forms part of ongoing regional efforts aimed at enhancing cooperation and coordinating responses to the evolving security threats confronting West Africa and the Sahel region.

President Bio was accompanied by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, and former Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Mohamed Sidi Tunis. Their participation underscored the significance of the mission and the commitment of regional leaders to advancing peace, stability, and sustainable development throughout the sub-region.

Upon arrival, President Bio received a warm and cordial welcome from President Ghazouani and senior Mauritanian government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Merzoug. The reception reflected the strong diplomatic ties between Sierra Leone and Mauritania, as well as the shared commitment of both countries to promoting regional peace and security.

The visit provided a platform for President Bio and President Ghazouani to engage in high-level consultations on the security situation in the Sahel and the broader West African region. Discussions focused on the growing threats posed by terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime, illicit trafficking, and other forms of insecurity that continue to challenge peace, stability, and economic development across the region.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation among African nations in confronting these threats. They highlighted the need for enhanced intelligence sharing, stronger border management systems, coordinated security operations, and sustained diplomatic engagement to address the root causes of instability and insecurity.

As Chairman of ECOWAS, President Bio reiterated his commitment to promoting dialogue, preventive diplomacy, and collective action as key pillars for maintaining peace and stability in the region. He stressed that no country can effectively tackle modern security challenges in isolation and called for deeper collaboration among regional and international partners.

The discussions also explored opportunities for expanding cooperation between ECOWAS and Mauritania in areas of peacebuilding, conflict prevention, governance, and economic development. The leaders acknowledged that sustainable peace can only be achieved through a comprehensive approach that combines security measures with social and economic progress.

President Bio’s visit comes at a crucial moment as countries across the Sahel continue to face complex security challenges that require coordinated regional solutions. His engagement with President Ghazouani reflects a shared determination to strengthen partnerships and foster a united response to threats affecting the stability and prosperity of the region.
