The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has directed that the current executive of the All People’s Congress (APC) Party should continue managing the affairs of the party pending a court determination on a dispute over the party’s leadership arrangements.
In a press statement dated August 17, 2026, the PPRC recalled that it issued directives to the APC on February 13, 2026, concerning the extension of the tenure of the party’s elected officials.
According to the Commission, the directive extended the tenure of the APC Executive by six months pursuant to Section 39(5) of the Political Parties Act 2022, Act No. 25 of 2022.
The PPRC said its directive further provided that if the APC Executive failed to take the party to its National Delegates’ Conference after the expiration of the six-month extension, the party’s Leader in Parliament, together with five other Members of Parliament representing each region, would assume responsibility for managing the affairs of the party until the conference was held.
However, the Commission said the situation has since been complicated by a legal action instituted by a member of the APC, who has taken both the PPRC and the party to court over the second limb of the directive.
“In light of the above,” the Commission stated, it is constrained to give effect to its second directive while the matter remains before the court.
The PPRC consequently clarified that the status quo will remain in place pending the determination of the case.
This means the current APC Executive members will continue to run the affairs of the party until the court delivers its decision on the matter.
The latest position by the regulatory body effectively puts on hold the proposed leadership arrangement that would have transferred the management of the APC to the party’s parliamentary leader and regional representatives following the expiration of the six-month extension.
The statement was signed by Lucien H.L. Momoh, Director of Public Education and ICT at the PPRC.
