The championship is in honour of Leone Rock Metal Group, the leading mining company in Sierra Leone, operating in Tonkolili and Port Loko districts.

Despite being propelled by the ambition to represent the department, several students, ranging from Year 1 to Year 4, who participated in the championship, also confessed that they were attracted by this year’s bumpy packages.

The championship, held on May 8 and May 9 respectively, at the Fatima Campus Mama Rugie Multi-purpose Hall, produced Salman Sesay and Mirian Moseary as the best male and female debaters of the department.

While Samuel Benbu’s mightiful penmanship and outstanding performance earned him the title of the best poet for the 2024/25 academic year.

Representing the Leone Rock Metal Group, Amb. Bashir Koroma, noted that this year’s support to the Mass Communication Department reaffirms the company’s commitment to fulfilling its corporate social responsibility.

He announced that the company has provided a huge support to the department for the 2024/25 academic year, totalling Forty-Two Thousand New Leones (NLe42,000), including a sponsorship package for its annual dinner scheduled for later this month.

“Every year, we splash millions of new leones on CSR nationwide, beyond our operational areas,” Bashir Koroma added.

Ibrahim Saidu Bangura, President of the Association of Mass Communicators UNIMAK (AMCU) expressed deep appreciation to the Leone Rock Metal Group for its confidence in his leadership and pledged to use the funds responsibly and transparently.

”This huge support aided us in splashing attractive prizes for this year’s championship which captured the hearts of brilliant and outspoken students to represent the department,” he admitted.

Leone Rock’s support provided to UNIMAK’s Mass Communication Department highlights its unwavering dedication to education, human capital development and nation-building, complementing the Government of Sierra Leone’s efforts to invest in youth empowerment and academic growth.
