SLPHA Responds Swiftly to Port Fire

Operations at Sierra Leone’s main commercial seaport have returned to normal after a fire incident involving a container haulage truck at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Cline Town.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, 6th October 2026, at the Buffer Zone of the Queen Elizabeth II Quay, popularly known as the Water Quay. According to the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), the fire started at approximately 2:00 p.m. and engulfed a haulage truck transporting a 40-foot container.

The sudden outbreak generated thick smoke across the area, briefly causing concern among port workers, truck drivers and other people operating within the busy port facility.

However, the situation was brought under control after the SLPHA Port Fire Team moved swiftly to the scene. The firefighting operation was conducted in collaboration with other relevant port stakeholders, preventing the flames from spreading to surrounding trucks and containers.

In a public notice dated 6th October 2026, SLPHA Management confirmed that there were no casualties recorded in connection with the incident.

The Authority further clarified that the container involved in the incident remained intact, while the fire was successfully contained before it could cause further damage within the port premises.

Although the immediate response prevented a potentially more serious situation, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown.

SLPHA said relevant teams are currently assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident and have implemented the necessary safety and operational measures following the emergency response.

The Authority also moved to reassure port users, shipping companies, transport operators, workers and the wider public that safety and security continue to receive priority attention at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay.

According to the Authority, normal port operations have since resumed, with activities continuing following the successful containment of the fire.

SLPHA said further information would be provided to the public as appropriate as investigations and assessments continue.
