Kono Court Sentences Child Sexual Offender to Life Imprisonment

The High Court of Sierra Leone in Kono District has sentenced Amos Aidan Daniel to life imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to charges relating to the sexual abuse of a two-year-old girl.

The sentence was delivered on Monday, June 15, 2026, by Justice Santigie Ibrahim Sorie Bangura, who described the offence as grave and deserving of the severest punishment provided by law.

According to evidence presented before the court, the offence occurred on March 4, 2026. The accused was subsequently charged under the Sexual Offences Act 2012, as amended in 2019.

In his judgment, Justice Bangura imposed a life sentence on Count One and additional prison terms of ten years each on Counts Two and Three.

State Prosecutor C.R. Sesay informed the court that the convict had a previous criminal record and urged the court to take his past conduct into consideration during sentencing.

Defence counsel A.O. Kamara acknowledged the accused’s previous conviction for wounding with intent and appealed for leniency, noting that Daniel had cooperated with investigators and pleaded guilty to the charges.

Despite the plea for mercy, Justice Bangura stressed that crimes against children carry profound and long-lasting consequences for victims and their families. He emphasized the need for strong judicial action to deter similar offences and safeguard the rights and welfare of children.

The court’s ruling underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence and ensuring justice for vulnerable victims.

The life sentence serves as a strong warning that perpetrators of crimes against children will face the full force of the law.
