Malador Travel Agency Under Government Scrutiny

The Government of Sierra Leone has commenced an investigation into allegations of irregular overseas recruitment involving Malador Travel Agency following reports that 28 Sierra Leonean nationals were transported to Qatar without verified employment documentation.

The inquiry, led by the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security, was triggered by information received from the Sierra Leone Embassy in Qatar, which raised concerns about the circumstances under which the workers were recruited and deployed. According to the Ministry, the recruitment exercise was reportedly facilitated by Malador Travel Agency in collaboration with certain Sierra Leoneans residing in Qatar.

Preliminary findings indicate that the workers travelled to the Gulf nation on the understanding that employment opportunities had been secured for them. However, authorities say the individuals allegedly arrived without authenticated employment contracts, a requirement under Sierra Leone’s labour migration framework and international labour protection standards.

The Ministry described the allegations as a serious breach of established recruitment procedures and warned that such practices expose migrant workers to significant risks, including labour exploitation, legal uncertainty, poor working conditions and financial hardship.

In an official directive issued to the agency, the Ministry ordered Malador Travel Agency to submit valid and authenticated employment contracts for all 28 workers within five working days. Officials emphasized that the documentation must clearly demonstrate that the workers were recruited in accordance with national regulations governing overseas employment.

Failure to comply with the directive could result in severe consequences. Government authorities have warned that the affected workers may be repatriated to Sierra Leone if their employment status cannot be regularized. In addition, Malador Travel Agency could face disciplinary measures ranging from suspension of its operations to the complete revocation of its recruitment licence.

The Ministry stressed that licensed recruitment agencies have a legal and ethical responsibility to protect the welfare of Sierra Leoneans seeking opportunities abroad. Officials reiterated that all overseas recruitment activities must be conducted transparently and in strict compliance with labour migration laws designed to safeguard workers from abuse and exploitation.

Meanwhile, the Government has assured the public that it is maintaining close communication with the Sierra Leone Embassy in Qatar to monitor the situation and ensure that the rights and wellbeing of the affected workers are protected throughout the investigation.

The development comes amid growing concerns about irregular labour migration schemes targeting Sierra Leoneans. Authorities revealed that they have also received reports of unauthorized recruitment drives linked to employment opportunities in Russia and other conflict-affected countries, particularly for defence and security-related positions.

Government officials have strongly cautioned citizens against engaging in such arrangements, noting that many of these schemes operate outside approved legal channels and may place participants in dangerous and potentially life-threatening situations.

The Ministry urged prospective migrant workers to verify the legitimacy of recruitment agencies before making financial commitments or travel plans. It also encouraged members of the public to seek guidance from relevant government institutions whenever they are offered employment opportunities abroad.

As investigations continue, the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing labour migration regulations and holding accountable any individual or organization found to have violated the country’s recruitment laws. Officials say the Government remains determined to ensure that overseas employment opportunities for Sierra Leoneans are pursued through safe, legal and transparent processes that uphold the dignity and rights of workers.
