RCBank Marks Tree Anniversary

In a strong demonstration of corporate environmental responsibility and community partnership, Rokel Commercial Bank has commemorated the seventh anniversary of its annual tree planting exercise at Patefu Kangalop Village in Koya Chiefdom, reaffirming its dedication to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and national development.

The landmark event, held on Friday, 22nd May 2026, attracted a wide cross-section of stakeholders including officials of the bank, representatives from the financial sector, environmental advocates, youth organizations, traditional authorities, and residents of Patefu Village. The ceremony was observed under the theme, “Building Legacy, One Tree at a Time,” reflecting the bank’s continued efforts to contribute meaningfully to environmental protection and sustainable community empowerment in Sierra Leone.

Over the years, the initiative has become one of the flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes undertaken by Rokel Commercial Bank, aimed at combating deforestation, land degradation, and the growing impact of climate change through regular afforestation activities. Since its establishment in 2019, the programme has steadily expanded in scope and public relevance, earning recognition from environmental stakeholders and development partners across the country.

Delivering his keynote address during the ceremony, the Managing Director of Rokel Commercial Bank, Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin, underscored the critical importance of environmental conservation and sustainable ecological practices in safeguarding the future of Sierra Leone.

Dr. Gilpin stated that tree planting remains one of the most practical and impactful approaches in addressing climate-related challenges affecting communities globally. According to him, the preservation of the environment goes beyond institutional obligation and should be embraced as a collective national responsibility.

He noted that trees play a vital role in improving air quality, protecting water catchment areas, reducing soil erosion, preserving biodiversity, and enhancing the overall resilience of ecosystems. He further explained that the initiative also seeks to educate communities about environmental stewardship and encourage sustainable living practices among young people and future generations.

“Every tree planted today symbolizes our commitment to protecting the environment and investing in the future of Sierra Leone. As a responsible corporate institution, we believe that sustainable development must include environmental protection alongside economic growth,” Dr. Gilpin remarked.

He added that Rokel Commercial Bank remains committed to strengthening partnerships with local communities and stakeholders in advancing environmental awareness and promoting long-term climate resilience initiatives across the country.

Representing the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone, Mr. John Tucker praised Rokel Commercial Bank for sustaining the initiative over the years and for demonstrating leadership beyond the traditional functions of banking and finance.

Mr. Tucker emphasized that climate change and environmental degradation continue to pose serious threats to livelihoods, food security, public health, and economic stability around the world. He stressed that addressing such challenges requires collaborative efforts involving governments, private institutions, civil society organizations, and local communities.

He further stated that the Bank of Sierra Leone encourages financial institutions operating within the country to integrate impactful CSR activities into their operations, especially initiatives that directly support environmental conservation and community development.

According to him, Rokel Commercial Bank’s tree planting project serves as an excellent example of how corporate organizations can positively contribute to national environmental goals while strengthening community engagement.

“Environmental protection is directly linked to sustainable economic growth and national development. Initiatives like this should be encouraged because they contribute to creating healthier and more resilient communities,” he stated.

Also addressing participants during the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Keeping Hope Alive, Madam Neneh Tunis, described the initiative as a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and long-term investment in the wellbeing of future generations.

She commended Rokel Commercial Bank for maintaining consistency in the implementation of the programme and for recognizing the importance of environmental sustainability in community development.

Madam Tunis noted that every tree planted represents renewed hope in the collective fight against climate change and environmental degradation. She stressed that protecting the environment should not be left to government institutions alone, but must involve active participation from citizens, corporate organizations, and young people across the country.

“Keeping hope alive means investing in the future of our communities and ensuring that the next generation inherits a safer, greener, and healthier Sierra Leone,” she stated.

She further called on communities to continue protecting natural resources and preserving the environment for future generations. She also highlighted the importance of environmental education and awareness creation, particularly among young people, noting that sustainable development can only be achieved through collaboration and shared responsibility.

Madam Tunis additionally praised the people of Patefu Village for their continued support and cooperation throughout the years, while reaffirming the commitment of partners involved in expanding initiatives centered on environmental protection, climate resilience, youth empowerment, and community sustainability.

The ceremony featured symbolic tree planting sessions involving senior officials, youth representatives, community leaders, and school children, all of whom participated in planting trees across designated areas within the community. Environmental awareness discussions and community engagements also formed part of the activities, with participants advocating for stronger national support toward conservation efforts and climate action initiatives.

Residents of Patefu Village expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as an important contribution toward preserving the environment and improving the wellbeing of the community. Several community stakeholders called for similar projects to be replicated in other parts of Sierra Leone as the country continues to face increasing environmental challenges linked to deforestation and climate change.

As the annual programme continues to grow, Rokel Commercial Bank’s tree planting initiative is gradually emerging as one of Sierra Leone’s notable private-sector-led environmental conservation efforts, reinforcing the message that sustainable development and environmental protection must go hand in hand in building a better future for generations to come.
