A tragic road accident in the early hours of Saturday has left two people dead at Saynior Junction, Calaba Town, in the eastern part of Freetown, sparking renewed calls for stricter road safety measures across the capital.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fatal collision involved a truck and a motorcycle carrying a female passenger believed to have been travelling from the provinces. Witnesses alleged that the truck veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the motorcycle.
The impact of the crash was severe, reportedly killing both the motorbike rider and the female passenger instantly. Residents and passersby who rushed to the scene described the incident as devastating, with debris scattered across the roadway.
In addition to the loss of life, the collision caused substantial damage to an electricity pole owned by the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA). The damaged infrastructure raised concerns among residents about potential electrical hazards and disruptions to power supply in the surrounding community.
Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the accident to control traffic, secure the area, and commence preliminary investigations. The bodies of the deceased were later removed as authorities began gathering evidence to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
At the time of publication, the identities of the victims had not been officially released. Law enforcement officials have indicated that further details will be made available as investigations progress.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over road safety in Freetown, particularly along busy transport corridors frequently used by heavy-duty vehicles, commercial motorcyclists, and public transport operators. Residents have called on drivers to exercise greater caution, observe traffic regulations, avoid reckless overtaking, and respect speed limits to help prevent similar tragedies.
