Efforts to improve access to primary healthcare in Kori Chiefdom, Moyamba District, are showing signs of progress, with health authorities reporting consistent immunisation performance and improved staffing across the chiefdom’s health facilities.
The Officer-in-Charge of the Government Community Health Centre (CHC), commonly known as Welbodi, and Chiefdom Health Supervisor for Kori’s Peripheral Health Units (PHUs), Jusu Sillah, disclosed the development during an interview with Kori Radio on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
Sillah said the health situation of a community is assessed using several indicators, including immunisation coverage, which remains one of the key measures used by the Ministry of Health to determine progress in public health delivery.
He explained that the Ministry establishes immunisation targets for communities nationwide, noting that Kori Chiefdom has continued to achieve the targets set for it.
According to Sillah, the chiefdom currently has 12 PHUs providing essential health services to residents across different communities. He further revealed that plans are underway to construct an additional health facility at Kpendebu Village.
If completed, the proposed facility would bring the total number of PHUs in Kori Chiefdom to 13, potentially expanding access to basic healthcare for communities currently travelling longer distances to seek medical attention.
On staffing, Sillah acknowledged that some facilities have experienced personnel shortages. However, he maintained that all 12 existing PHUs currently have health workers assigned to them and continue to provide services, including during weekends.
He specifically cited the Waima PHU, which had previously faced staffing constraints, as an example of the progress being made. According to him, the facility’s situation has improved following the deployment of an additional health worker.
Sillah said the deployment has helped strengthen service delivery at Waima and reduced some of the pressure associated with limited personnel.
The Chiefdom Health Supervisor further emphasised that expanding health infrastructure while addressing staffing needs remains essential to improving healthcare delivery at the community level.
With the proposed Kpendebu facility and ongoing efforts to strengthen staffing, health authorities hope to further close gaps in access and ensure that residents across Kori Chiefdom can receive essential healthcare services closer to their communities.
The developments come as Sierra Leone continues to prioritise primary healthcare, immunisation and community-level health services as important components of efforts to improve health outcomes nationwide.
